Food Poisoning

One of the most common infections today is food poisoning. The food might look appetizing and smell delicious but without your knowledge it might contain tiny bacteria that could poison your digestive system.
Symptoms of food poisoning are:
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
How to Avoid Food Poisoning
  • Make sure it always kept either cold or hot. Bacteria cannot multiply below 19C or above 71C.
  • Make sure all seafood, meat and poultry are cooked thoroughly. Cooking these foods to an internal temperature of 78C will kill the bacteria present. Be careful about tasting food before it is thoroughly cooked.
  • Leftovers should be reheated to 78C or above, and note just warmed up.
  • Wash your hands before cooking or handling food, and between handling cooked and raw food.
  • Keep your kitchen equipment clean at all times, especially when cooking and handling food.
  • Discard food in the refrigerator that is covered with mould or if it smells bad.
  • Clean the refrigerator thoroughly.
Food poisoning usually occurs within one to six hours after eating. It should be over in a day or two. If the problem persists and you become severely ill, see a doctor immediately.
